Evolved To Support All Financial Goals
In 2022, we celebrated 50 years in business and established the MissionSquare Foundation to help make a meaningful impact in our communities. In 2025, we became MissionSquare, announcing our plans to broaden our suite of capabilities to deliver comprehensive wealth management services in addition to workplace retirement plans. Today, we focus on helping individuals and their families achieve their full range of financial goals.

2019-2021
Introduced Our New Name
By 2020, we were helping over 1.5 million people achieve their retirement goals. We also introduced 403(b) plans to our product offerings to help education, health care, and not-for-profit workers save for their retirement goals. In 2021, we changed our name to MissionSquare Retirement, a nod to our mission-focused work and public service roots.

Expanded Our Offerings
We continued to expand our offerings and focus on quality investments, launching the Employer Investment Program, MissionSquare Milestone target-date fund, and Guided Pathways® Advisory Services. During these years, we also launched what is now the MissionSquare Research Institute, providing public sector workforce research and insights to help employers attract and retain workers.

Now helping over 500,000 people plan for their future, we established what is now the MissionSquare Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor public service employees and their families. Giving back to our communities has always been a core part of our corporate culture.

Founded With a Mission
In 1972, city and county managers founded ICMA Retirement Corporation with a Ford Foundation grant and a mission to create easier access to retirement savings for public sector workers. Our first product, portable deferred compensation plans, was designed to help public sector employers and their employees achieve their retirement goals.
